about

In the Summer of 2017, Matthew was spending time around Dallas between semesters at Oberlin. We were lucky enough to catch a few of his sets at RBC and The Wild Detectives at various experimental & improvisation nights, and we're blown away by his vigorous energy and mastery over his instrument. Lucky for us, Frerck accepted an offer to come by the studio to record some improvisations while he was in town. He brought his bass and an array of objects, including a clothes hanger, binder clips, and a vinyl record. Documenting these improvisations in the isolation of an empty studio was such a pleasure. We have enjoyed working with Frerck over the months to arrive at an ideal mix of his improvisations, and we are even more pleased now to share it with the public. Please enjoy.

Artist Statement
Matthew Frerck is an improvising bassist from Richardson Texas who performs in a wide variety of free music, jazz, and new music ensembles. Born a natural weirdo, Frerck gravitated towards eclectic music and Bass became the preferred instrument for him to explore those sounds. Currently located in Oberlin, Ohio, Frerck studies Double Bass and Improvisation at Oberlin Conservatory of Music under bassist Peter Dominguez and improviser Dana Jessen. Frerck has performed in Oberlin's Contemporary Music Ensemble, Oberlin Orchestra, numerous jazz ensembles, and his own group Freestore.
